The Phoenix gets one right

Steel & Slag

from The Phoenix, October 26, 2007

Slag goes to the borough administration for not presenting even preliminary budget estimates at the borough council committees meeting on Monday, despite council’s previous order to do so. Borough Manager Anthony DiGirolomo said that presenting current estimates would only waste time. Is that really his decision to make?

Apparently so, because council made hardly any objection. Slag goes to the seven members who tamely accepted this refusal of their direction, but Steel goes to Kendrick Buckwalter, the councilman who has been pressing to get budget figures sooner, so that there would be sufficient time for debating them and making changes, if necessary.

The Phoenix should have quoted you when you foolishly/sarcastically congratulated the council on producing the budget numbers in the Oct committee. Should have stuck around to grumble more. Why did no one stay around for the finance committee?

I suppose it really was foolish to expect Council to do what it said it would.

Luckily the meeting was televised, so that it was not really necessary to wait and watch in person while Council transferred $8.06 for soap.

"I suppose it really was foolish to expect Council to do what it said it would."

Actually, it was foolish to expect the manager to do what the council directed him to do.

Give what occurred, I believe that the Manager did precisely what the Council leadership instructed him to do.

All the 'direction' to get the budget done earlier was nothing more than a cynical charade.

Well then - things are worst off than I thought they were. Maybe Carlos was absent because he was physically ill just thinking about sitting through that meeting, and Capt. Buckwalter must have a cast iron stomache to put up with that week in and week out.
