$35,196.69 per space

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports on May 9th that the new garage at Main and Cherry Streets in Norristown has 483 spaces and cost $17 million.

You are welcome to check my math.

Hmmm, not knowing how many spaces OUR garage will be is a little problematic, but I dare say those figures mean a brand spanking new garage in downtown Phoenixville would probably be worth more than the three block area it would service.

Par for the course.

Given that I have heard that there is no item in the 2008 budget for establishing a parking authority or for building a parking garage at council meetings, my back of the envelope calculation means that we will be getting zero (0) parking spaces in a publicly-backed parking structure this year at that cost.

Those kinds of numbers make me happy. I hope we can go the next 20 years or so with the same amount of parking spaces in a publicly-backed parking structure.

There are alternatives to a publicly-backed parking structure, perhaps we could see if any of the businesses in town (or a consortium thereof) would be willing to pay $35,000+ per space.

Thanks for gathering this information and dissemminating it.
